I found this on Kanye West’s site, and I always give things I find on there a listen. Often times I will get turned on to a group or an artist that I would have never even heard of, let alone gotten a chance to sample their music. As I watched this ridiculously quirky video, I just kept hoping that this kid wasn’t going to start rapping, and I got my wish. Through out the day yesterday, the beat and the chorus were stuck in my head, and that was my litmus test for figuring out if I like a song or not. Because of my music background and my love of all things music, I then researched Mayer Hawthorne but only really came up with a few biographical facts, and nothing that really made me want to hear more. Turns out he is a rapper sometimes, but that’s not what I’m signing up for. I’m also the analytical type, and I’m not much for irony being the only thing that makes an artist popular. You know: nerdy, Jewish, skater that happens to make funky music. The point is people, sometimes liking one song is enough. I guess right now, I’m allowing myself to like the song for the song. Hopefully 1 song will lead to 2, and 2 will lead to 50, but in 2010 I’m not going to hold my breath. So I thank you young “Mayer Hawthorne” (stage name). You have made a song I dig, and that’s not easy to do. Let me know what you think.
