Sneakers I Dig: 2/1/10

This isn’t the first time you’ve seen a pair of Nike Auto Flight Highs on CMG. These are a throwback silhouette, with an updated, “vulcanized” sole. Hightops are pretty fashionable right now, and pretty damn great for the winter. Fashionably, they have what’s known as a “pop of color,” which is one of those cool things that simply say “look at my cool black and white snea…..oooooh purple!” When you’re rocking the most simple color combination in history, it’s a good idea to throw in something that makes no sense….like purple. Once again, I can’t allow myself to purchase another pair of black sneakers, so let me live vicariously through you.

These sneaker updates have been off the hook. Now I’m getting interested in your own collection, and I have what I believe is a pertinent question: at what point do you have to retire a pair of shoes? I have a great pair of Nikes that I bought last year; they only got put into heavy rotation when my boss started letting me wear them to work – which I’ve done every day since, four days a week. The top part of the shoe, just below the bottom lace, is starting to come up a little bit (that always happens on my shoes, must be something related to my arch, which is pretty pronounced), and the lighter part of the leather, the grey tones, are mildly scuffed and marked in some places.

What would Whut do? I don’t really have enough pairs of great shoes to take these babies out of rotation; I’m just curious what move a true sneaker-obsessed citizen makes.

Good question sir. I would have to say that a shoe should be taken out of rotation whenever you feel as if they no longer represent you. If you have a “clean” look and your sneakers are “dogged out,” get rid of ‘em. If you are in a “hightop phase,” and you don’t feel like you’re much of a “running shoe guy” then put ‘em away for later. I have like 35 plus pair of sneakers, and at least 85% of them look new, or could if I cleaned them. I currently have about a 7-8 pair rotation. Just my 2 cents.
