Sweater Stories

Sweater Stories

Every year as summer starts dwindling away, I find myself eagerly anticipating Fall…no more sweating within 5 minutes of leaving my apartment, indulging in a cold pumpkin ale or two or three or eight, and of course, finally busting out the sweaters from the drawers where they’ve been hibernating for the past 5 months.

Here, my picks for the sweaters girls would like to see you wear. Consider this my ode to the almighty sweater, in no particular order.

shawl

Shawl Collar

What started as a trend has begun to achieve staple-dom, meaning every closet should have one of these bad boys. Refers to the rounded shape of the collar, rather than a sharp lapel.  This dude is wearing a thick, cable knit jump off, but this collar is featured on just about any type of sweater.

military

Military Inspired

This look is always seen on the runways every few years. Done properly, I consider it more of a classic, meaning it’s always going to be in style. But do only one piece at a time. More than that and you’ll look like you are wearing a costume.

cardigan

cardi

Grandpa Cardigan
Love it or hate it, this one is here to stay. They come in a variety of lengths, patterns, and pockets. If you are going to layer it, be sure to pick a thin knit. A chunky knit will only add more fluff. Unless you like that sort of thing.

gap fari isle

Fair Isle

Named for a small island off Norway.  Fair Isle refers to the pattern, and they are usually done in muted neutrals, and make you look like you should be at a ski lodge all cozy and sipping hot chocolate. Yum.

Navajo

This is a serious personal fave. This can be tricky to pull off, but if done right can be really cool. I haven’t seen too many people doing this print yet, which is more of a reason for you to try it. Keep everything else you’re wearing simple and solid. Otherwise, you risk looking like a loon.

I really like the military-inspired sweater… You mentioned some online clothing sites in another post – uniqlo, etc. – which do you think is a good one to buy one of those sweaters from?

Should I just do a google search and type in “military sweater” and go from there – or is it a more specific science than that?

Thanks! I’m ’bout to take it up a notch. (Thum Kirkland sweaters got to go.)

Gap, all day. I actually own that exact sweater that is pictured from the Gap. If you check their site from time to time they have sales. I got mine for 30% off, for no reason.

yeah, I agree. Gap and Banana Republic have the best selections of sweaters, mainly because they hit the trends but in a way that is more subdued, not as over the top as some of the other sites I mentioned. Although sometimes BR sweaters get all nasty looking after one or two wears. And at $100 a pop, that ain’t cool.

And Roy, that was the best reply I ever got so far! Super sweet. Glad you like!
